Development of the Kingdom

The early years were not without their problems. Fierce confrontations with the Caliphate of Cordoba, rivalry with the Kingdom Of Navarre, rebellion in the County of Castile, which demanded secession and internal struggles between contenders for the throne and noble factions, almost brought about the dissolution of the Kingdom of León. It was the people’s fighting spirit together with their determination to recover the nation’s golden years which were behind the Kingdom’s return to power. The León people rose again with renewed strength, and fought back with such energy that other contenders were obliged to recognise the hegemony of León and concede the Imperial Crown to the León monarchs.
